Top Dawg Preview: Georgia vs Baylor Sugar Bowl 2020! A Shot at Redemption! The Dawn of a New Decade!12/31/2019 A shot at redemption! Georgia has a chance to reset the clocks and go back to the Sugar Bowl and win it. This time they will be facing a talented Baylor team that only lost to Oklahoma all season long.
A roller-coaster season for the Georgia Bulldogs comes to an end Wednesday when the Dawgs face off with the Bears. The Sugar Bowl part two for Georgia as they played in the very same bowl game against Texas last season. While many are hoping for a different result, as the Bulldogs didn’t impress in New Orleans last season against the Texas Longhorns. The Sugar Bowl is a must-win for Georgia this time around. While many fans were upset at not being in the playoffs last season, everyone is focusing on winning the Sugar Bowl and using it as a springboard into next season. The loss to South Carolina that Georgia suffered early in the season was a sign that this Georgia team wasn’t going to be the one to win it all. They still have a chance of winning something, though. A win in the Sugar Bowl is a win in a New Year’s Six Bowl, which is considered the second most prestigious set of bowl games a program can be apart of. One of the biggest letdowns this season for Georgia has been the offense. We have gone over so many times and how it is so disappointing. It is clear what Georgia has to do to become Sugar Bowl champions. Georgia needs to focus on outscoring their opponent, which Baylor, who possesses a very fast-paced offense that likes to put points on the board — opposed to Georgia’s pro-style offense, which goes at a slower pace and tries to control the clock and ultimately the game. Georgia needs to be able to move the ball against a Baylor defense that ranks top 10 in sacks this season. An impressive feature for a team that plays a very innovative style of defense. Baylor has committed to the 3-3-5 defensive formation, which is something new and different then many defenses that Georgia has faced this season. Many would think it would be hard to generate a pass rush with just three people upfront. But Baylor has shown that there can be a success in that type of defense. Baylor likes to send a fourth guy when they are playing can usually be hard to identify where that extra person is coming from. With three starting offensive lineman out for the upcoming Sugar Bowl, it will be a tough task to face a Baylor front that specializes in rushing the passer. While left tackle Cade Mays and right tackle Jamaree Salyer have gained a lot of extra snaps this season, they haven’t played the snaps and gained the knowledge like Andrew Thomas, and Isaiah Wilson gained. Georgia will not be able just to double team the Baylor front as there is usually a delayed linebacker blitz coming from either side. So Georgia will have to rely on freshman Warren Ericson who is likely to start at the right guard. The passing game has been a weakness for Georgia this season as Jake Fromm hasn’t always been on the same page as the receivers this season. They will have to trust each other now as if they don’t this will be an ugly game for the Bulldogs once again. The status of D’Andre Swift is a game-time decision and is likely the key to winning this game. If Swift is healthy and can go 100%, then look for Georgia to go to the ground early and often. Georgia likes to play bully ball with their opponents. Which is what I consider Georgia’s ground and pound running style that they’ve used this season. Tyler Simmons and George Pickens will be the two guys to watch at the receiver as they are both two of Fromm’s most reliable targets on the field for Georgia this game. The Georgia defense will be playing with a chip on their shoulder after the LSU loss in the SEC Championship Game, where the Tigers put up 37 points on the Georgia defense. The Baylor offense has some very dangerous weapons, and if taken lightly, they will make you pay. Quarterback Charlie Brewer is a talented quarterback who is a true dual-threat as he is a threat on the ground and especially through the air. Look for the RPO to be a big part of the Baylor game plan as they will try to open up the Georgia defense. The Georgia secondary will have its hands full as they will be dealing with NFL prospect Denzel Mims who is one of the best receivers that Georgia will face all season. Mims has the speed to run right by you and even run away from you. While he also has the height and athleticism to go up and bring down the 50/50 ball that QB Charlie Brewer likes to look for. Baylor has a very explosive offense that can beat you in one play just LSU could. The Bears run a spread offense that likes to move the ball quickly and take your breath away. A stark contrast to the one Georgia runs. The Dawgs have to get it done in New Orleans! If not, there are going to a lot of questions. Go Dawgs!
